Biography
BACKGROUND
Saba grew up in an immigrant household in sunny Southern California. As a child, Saba and her family relied on home remedies from her mom to address most health complaints and rarely went to the doctor. Natural foods and homemade meals were the norm, with desserts and eating out saved for special occasions. It was this exposure to healthy eating habits that laid the foundation for Saba’s life-long interest in nutrition and medicine.
Saba’s 10-year personal struggle with hormone imbalances led her to uncover the endless modalities that naturopathic medicine has to offer when conventional doctors report “nothing is wrong”. The road to her eventual diagnosis with hypothyroidism was difficult and came after many years of self-rationalizing slow and progressive symptoms that were chalked up to daily life stresses.
First-hand experience of symptoms such as unexplained weight gain, hair loss, debilitating fatigue, mood swings, constipation, and irregular and heavy periods helped solidify for Saba just how much hormones matter to overall health since they regulate most of our biological processes. It is through these symptoms that our bodies communicate that something is wrong, and the key is to stop and listen. Like all good mysteries, Saba believes that hormone imbalances can be solved (and rebalanced!).
EDUCATION
After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience from UCLA, Saba’s love of preventative medicine inspired her to continue her education and complete a Master of Public Health. Post-graduate work in the preventative health field reignited Saba’s long-time passion for medicine and highlighted the significant impact that direct doctor-patient collaboration has in improving health outcomes. Missing the connection and satisfaction of helping others along their health journey, Saba enrolled in the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in Portland. Saba earned her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine with honors from NUNM and then completed a competitive residency in integrative primary care at the university.
As a practicing Naturopathic Physician today, Saba employs an integrative, patient-centered approach to provide optimal care for patients at any stage of life. Her goal is to address the root cause of disease or disturbance in health rather than simply treating the symptoms. Saba particularly enjoys identifying and treating conditions resulting from hormonal imbalances, whether it is from helping the brain signal properly to the thyroid, ovaries, or adrenals or regulating blood sugars through insulin and cortisol release.
Saba is experienced in treating many hormonally driven conditions such as peri-menopausal and menopausal symptoms, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), PMS, infertility, dysmenorrhea, thyroid disorders, prediabetes, metabolic disease, estrogen dominance, and low testosterone. Personalized treatment avenues include nutrition and lifestyle counseling, botanical medicine, supplementation, Applied Kinesiology (AK), Nutritional Response Testing (NRT), IV and injection therapy, hormone replacement therapy, and pharmaceuticals.
Saba feels that obtaining a detailed history and physical exam while performing laboratory analysis should be an active and ongoing process that helps guide effective treatment plans. She values cooperation over compromise and is motivated to support the journey to reach the patient's goals.
HOBBIES
Saba takes every opportunity to visit family and soak up some vitamin D. She’s an avid world traveler and has visited India, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Iran, and Bali, just to name a few places. Saba finds the best lessons in life are learned through traveling, being immersed in the unknown and open to new possibilities and ways of living. This has translated in her medical practice in forming lasting connections with patients from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
